POSITION: Full-time tenure-track position in the Professorial series, Department of Dance.
SALARY AND RANK: SC#01030
STARTING DATE: July 1, 2008
JOB DESCRIPTION: Teach all levels of technique for existing courses in jazz dance, and teach or oversee tap classes; choreograph for department concerts as well as for musicals in the theatre department. An interest in hip hop culture, post-jazz evolution and African-based dance forms desirable. Potential exists for development of a history of jazz and/or African diasporic forms curriculum based on the research interests of the candidate. Other responsibilities include the following: advise students; direct graduate student thesis projects; participate in departmental administration and decision-making; serve on school and university committees; oversee dance productions on rotating basis with other faculty.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS: Professional experience as a choreographer for concert stage and/or musicals, and previous teaching at a university level required. Terminal degree in dance and university teaching experience are desirable.
ABOUT THE UC IRVINE DANCE DEPARTMENT: Often cited as one of the nation’s most outstanding dance programs on both the undergraduate and graduate level, the department now enrolls about 200 undergraduate dance majors (either B.A. or B.F.A. degree) and 20 M.F.A. candidates. Former UCI dance students have danced with many professional dance companies, as well as in films and musicals. All majors are required to study ballet, modern dance, and jazz dance. The department has six studios and performs in four theatres, as well as a variety of other venues. The UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in Dance, Drama, Music, and Studio Art.
