Graduate Coursework

We are delighted that you are interested in the Dance Department at the University of California, Irvine. Our program is built upon the philosophy that dancers should be prepared to perform many types of dance. Our coursework is designed for students preparing to continue professionally as dancers, as choreographers, and as teachers, as well as for students who have a serious interest in the theory, criticism, documentation, kinesiology, or history of dance. Theoretical and historical courses are required to complement the practical work in technique classes, choreography, and performance.

The Dance Department offers the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) graduate degree. We also have an undergraduate program in dance.

Graduate students are required to take six courses in dance technique, chosen from a wide range of Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Tap courses, supplemented by courses in Pilates, Social Dance, Spanish Dance, World Dance, and other areas.

Required courses in Choreography and Costume Design allow creativity to manifest itself in the student's own voice. Required courses in Bibliography and Research, Dance History/Ethnology, and Dance Criticism immerse you in the scholarly side of dance and encourage you to develop skills to articulate your viewpoints on dance in both written and verbal presentations. Courses in Teaching of Dance, Kinesiology, and Movement Analysis focus on productive and safe training techniques and on the healthy body moving in its environment.

We also offer courses in Dance and Digital Technology, including a selection of areas such as Motion Capture, Dance for Camera, Sound Design, Internet Performance, and other emerging opportunities in technology applied to dance media and performance.
