Program Details

Want to know more about our graduate program? Here are answers to some questions commonly asked by prospective graduate students. Please refer to the current UCI Catalogue for complete program details and admission requirements.

Q: What degree will I receive on graduation?

A: The UCI dance department offers a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in dance. This is a terminal degree providing candidates with the degree requirements necessary to teach in a university or college. The M.F.A. in dance is a two-year intensive program requiring courses in dance studios, digital labs, and academic areas.

Q: What are the graduate studies degree requirements?

A: Normally two years of residence are required. Each candidate must enroll for three courses each quarter for six quarters, exclusive of summer sessions.

At the end of the first year, students write a proposal stating the intention for the thesis project. Students individually request three members from the full time faculty to be on the thesis committee. Once the proposal is approved by the department, students may begin work on the thesis.

In the second year, satisfactory attainment must be demonstrated by a thesis, consisting of either:

  1. A thesis with performance or dance technology emphasis, with corresponding written component of about 20 to 30 pages; or
  2. A thesis with written research emphasis (such as history, criticism, labanotation, or dance science) of about 40 to 60 pages

All theses must be defended in an oral examination conducted by the thesis committee.
