Lady in Waiting

a dance about knowing and scrounging for details

Lady in Waiting is dedicated to all women who are looking for their mother, grandmother, daughter, sister or other significant person; someone who is with you all the time, but not physically present. It is a dance about knowing and scrounging for details--photos, scarves, dresses, journals. These details fill a shrine, a place to dance stories and create new memories. A memory with a face is easier to hold; I do the dance to help remember.... each step is a new shape, part of the rhythm and the story of all those who wait here and now.

Performed in 1999 at Oldenburg University in Germany, the Barbican Center in London, England and at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in Holland. Music composition by Laura Kessler.
