making the crossing

Portal explores various kinds of underground communication between a group of people who try to pass from one place to another. To highlight this idea, the performance space was divided into three main channels from upstage/downstage. The middle channel, sometimes thought of a "chamber" could be entered from"east" or "west" and served as the main place where people would assist each other to "make the crossing". At the downstage end of this middle chamber, a video screen was suspended between two polls, and during the dance displayed the US Immigration Act, scrolling text behind animated images of dancers. At the end of the dance, images of an old women appear on the screen. She throws breadcrumbs to feeding pigeons. These photos were taken while on tour in Krakow, Poland during the winter of 2000. Video image processing by John Crawford, music by Alan Terricciano. Video and stage choreography by Lisa Naugle.
