The latest issue of Dance Major Journal unveils a rich tapestry of perspectives and insights

The eagerly awaited next edition of Dance Major Journal (DMJ) has officially launched online at dance.arts.uci.edu/dance-major-journal or directly at escholarship.org/uc/dmj.  Bursting with engaging content, the latest edition of DMJ explores a myriad of topics from the unique vantage point of dancers.

Volume 11 offers an immersive experience that delves into the realms of body positivity, the reclaiming of Black spaces in jazz dance, navigating the struggles of a former hip-hop skeptic, the delicate art of breaking up with ballet, and the intriguing question of whether it's acceptable for a teacher to liken a dancer's arms to a dead chicken. Find out the answers and more within the pages of Dance Major Journal.

Readers will also discover thought-provoking articles addressing whether dancers should take "mental health days," the transformative power of gender studies on one's perception of dance, the evolution of salsa when taken out of its home in Latinidad, and an exploration of the respect (or lack thereof) for dance on TikTok. The journal further tackles issues such as overcoming toxic eating habits, the perpetual struggle of feeling "not enough," and the debate over whether ballet teachers should try to teach hip hop.

Dance Major Journal was established in 2010 within the Department of Dance at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts at the University of California, Irvine. Designed for dance majors and those seeking to understand their world, DMJ is a platform for sharing information, research, advice, and diverse points of view.

"It’s exciting to present Dance Major Journal Volume 11, yet another edition that unveils the smart and lively perspectives of dance majors and their world," says Professor Jennifer Fisher, founder and editor of DMJ.

DMJ welcomes a range of writing styles, from conversational and personal essays to humor and academically sound pieces that use clear language and lively prose. Contributors include university dance majors, graduate students in dance, and occasional contributions from seasoned dance professionals.
