IRVINE, Calif. (December 5, 2014) -- The Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA) at the University of California, Irvine is thrilled to announce that as part of our 50th anniversary season the Department of Dance will stage a revival of founding faculty member Eugene Loring’s classic American ballet, Billy the Kid. The work will be featured as part of Dance Visions, an annual constellation of faculty works which runs from February 11 – 15, 2015 in the Claire Trevor Theatre. The program will also include choreography by outstanding current faculty members Tong Wang, Shaun Boyle, and Donald McKayle.

Eugene Loring, founding Chair of the Dance Department when the School opened in 1965, was already a luminary in his field when he was hired by then Dean Clayton Garrison. Billy the Kid was commissioned by Ballet Caravan and premiered in Chicago in 1938, and has enjoyed an unbroken history of production since the opening. The rousing score is one

Lecturer of Dance Diane Diefenderfer presented lectures and workshops on “Dance and Education and Pilates Method for Physical Conditioning” at the Tsukuba Summer Institute (TSI) in Ibaraki, Japan. TSI is a week-long seminar/workshop for undergraduate and graduate students in physical education and sports sciences held at the University of Tsukuba. Diane is also a Distinguished Teacher for Pilates Anytime, an online Pilates Studio offering documentaries, interviews, workshops and classes.

Associate Professor of Dance Molly Lynch was commissioned to create a new work, “Passing,” for Sacramento Ballet’s Modern Masters Series. Lynch was also the Artistic Director for the 11th Annual National Choreographers Initiative, and was selected to present her choreography “Soaring” at the CORPS de Ballet International Conference in Pittsburg in June.

To celebrate our Golden Anniversary, we’re re-introducing some of our most notable founding faculty members: Dr. Robert Cohen, Claire Trevor Professor of Drama (and still a central member of the Drama Department), Dance’s Eugene Loring, Music’s Professor Emeritus H. Colin Slim, and several founding Art Department faculty members and students who are now part of any Who’s Who of Southern California art. Beyond these tributes, this year we’re building on our enormously successful 2013-14 season, in which CTSA was named — from a field of fortyeight nominees — Coast Magazine’s Top Arts Organization in Orange County
