Assistant Professor of Dance Science

Dance Health, Dance Kinesiology

Jeff Russell serves as Assistant Professor of Dance Science on the Dance Department faculty at the University of California, Irvine. He has 30 years of experience in sports medicine, orthopaedics, and dance medicine. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education (emphasis in Sports Medicine) from Rice University, a Master of Science in Physical Education (also with an emphasis in Sports Medicine) from the University of Arizona, and a PhD in Dance Medicine and Science from the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom.

Before moving with his family to England for his PhD work, Dr. Russell founded and directed the Performing Arts Medicine Service at Belhaven College, where he also served as Associate Professor of Sports Medicine and Exercise Science. Working with the support of the dance faculty, he conducted research that clearly demonstrated the need for dance medicine at the College. He presented this work, and the comprehensive dance healthcare program that resulted from it, to the annual meeting of the National Dance Association in 2004 and the annual symposium of the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) the following year.

Prior to Belhaven College he was the President and CEO of the Joe W. King Orthopedic Institute in Houston, Texas where he executed research for presentation at various professional societies and publication in a variety of orthopaedic journals. Additionally, he produced a wide range of educational conferences for physicians and allied health professionals. He also developed instructional courses in medical presentation techniques and the use of computers for improving oral and poster presentations for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie .

Dr. Russell earnestly and globally promotes the urgency of improving healthcare access for dancers through his teaching, service, and research. Over the years he has been a healthcare consultant to the Dance Ad Deum Summer Dance Intensive, Project Dance New York, the International Ballet Competition USA, and the Thalia Mara Arts International Foundation. For the past several years his research has focused on various facets of orthopaedic dance medicine and general dance healthcare. His doctoral research explored the ankle and foot in classical ballet utilizing techniques such as x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, and fiber optics to study anatomy and biomechanics, studies which he continues at UCI. As part of his PhD he invented a medical device to measure tension force in ligaments and tendons. This project garnered several university and regional business innovation awards in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Russell’s areas of teaching at UCI are dance health, dance kinesiology, and other scientific and medical aspects of dance. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and serves on the International Council of this organization. He also is a member of the Research Committee of IADMS and coordinates the association’s annual poster competition, and he is a communications consultant with the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers. In addition, he is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the International Society of Biomechanics.
